Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bid farewell to their hopes of advancing to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs following a defeat in their final league match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Saturday. Despite both teams ending with 14 points, CSK’s Net Run Rate fell slightly short compared to RCB’s, resulting in the Faf du Plessis-led side missing out on the playoffs. The loss not only left CSK fans disheartened about their team’s exit but also raised concerns about the potential retirement of MS Dhoni, a legendary figure in the franchise. However, a CSK official disclosed that Dhoni has yet to discuss his retirement plans with the team.

Speaking with the Times of India, a senior CSK official highlighted the pivotal moment in the final over of the match when the ball was changed after Dhoni’s massive 110-meter six. According to the official, this alteration impacted CSK’s performance, making hitting difficult, and consequently, thwarting Dhoni’s ambition to secure the IPL trophy at Chepauk.

“The change of the ball disrupted our momentum. Dayal received a drier ball, making hitting more challenging,” explained the CSK official.

Reports indicated that Dhoni promptly returned to Ranchi the following day, visibly affected by the outcome against RCB, being the first to depart from the CSK camp.

Regarding Dhoni’s future with the team, sources mentioned that the veteran cricketer has not yet informed the management about his retirement plans. Dhoni has advised the management to wait for a couple of months before a final decision is reached.

“Dhoni hasn’t conveyed any retirement plans to CSK. He has asked for some time before making a definitive decision,” a source revealed. “His fitness, particularly in running between wickets, remains reassuring.”

The potential impact of the ‘Impact Player’ rule, criticized by some active cricketers, is also under scrutiny in Dhoni’s contemplation of retirement.
